The year in review
It was a productive year for the Otisfield Historical Society. We saw strong attendance at our programs, made meaningful progress on the care of the Town House, and continued to expand both our collections and community engagement. As ever, this work depends on the steady support of our members, volunteers, and the Town of Otisfield.
Programs and community gatherings
Our season opened with a well-received series of presentations at Camp Arcadia. We are grateful to the always eloquent Anne Fritts for her engaging talk on the history of the camp. In August, Cheryl Callahan shared her expertise in textile history, walking an engaged crowd through the process of preparing wool and linen, among other related topics. We also thank Dr. Barry Rodrigue for his thoughtful perspective on archaeology and for shedding light on the archaeological process, including his work surveying property here in Otisfield. These programs set a high standard for the year and drew strong interest.
The Strawberry Festival was, once again, well attended and ably supported by a dedicated group of volunteers. The Lake Region Strummers provided music. We are grateful to all who helped organize, prepare, and serve, and to the many community members who turned out and made the event a success.
Caring for the Town House
A significant portion of the year was devoted to work on the Town House. With the expertise of Ken Bartow, we replaced the front entrance steps using composite materials designed for durability and safety. During this work, additional concerns came to light, including moisture-related deterioration and possible splashback effects from the heat pump system. These are not small matters, but they are now better understood, and we are considering next steps.
We are grateful for the financial support of the Town of Otisfield and the Norway Savings Bank Community Giving Program, both of which made this work possible.
The Grange bulletin board returns
This year also saw the return of the original Spurrs Corner Grange bulletin board, thanks to Clark and Jane Irwin. After many years out of town, it has been placed into our care and is now part of our permanent collection.
Archives and volunteers
Our archives remained open through the season under the care of Maureen Mooney-Howard, whose work continues to make these materials accessible to the public. The archives will reopen in May 2026.
This year we also welcomed a new member to our Board of Directors -- Laurie Wood. As always, we continue to look for interested community members to join our board. If you or someone you know is interested, please reach out to us.
Looking ahead to 2026
Looking ahead, plans are underway for the 2026 season, which will include an expanded program of events tied to the nation’s Semiquincentennial. We expect another full year.
We thank the people of Otisfield for their continued support. It remains essential to the work of preserving our shared history.
