The year in review
2024 was a historic year for the Otisfield Historical Society as we continued our mission to preserve and celebrate the rich history of Otisfield. Our membership was more active than ever, and we extend our sincere gratitude to all of you for your time, energy, and contributions. Your support makes our work possible.
Remembering Forrest Edwards
Our slate of programs last year began with a journey down memory lane, highlighting the life of Forrest Edwards. Known for his hard-working demeanor and sharp mind, history had slightly overlooked his incredible kindness. During the Great Depression, Forrest quietly provided loans to local families, helping them through challenging times.
Strawberry Festival
In July, the annual Strawberry Festival at the Bell Hill Meetinghouse was once again a record-breaking success. On a beautiful summer day, we welcomed over 200 guests who enjoyed delicious shortcake and admired the artwork of local artist Annie Gregoire. Mark your calendars—this year’s festival will be held on July 6, 2025, from 4 PM to 6 PM!
Grange music
In August, we were joined by the talented musician Katherine Rhoda for a program on Otisfield’s Granges and the music that would have been performed in them. Even Forrest Edwards attended a local Grange and played music!
South Otisfield Cemetery tour
October saw the return of one of our most popular events—a tour of the South Otisfield Cemetery in Dunkertown. Despite the cold and wind, many friends joined us to learn about the history of South Otisfield and the individuals laid to rest in the cemetery.
Looking ahead to 2025
Our 2025 program schedule is still being finalized, and we look forward to welcoming a number of guest speakers. If you haven’t yet subscribed to our email list, we encourage you to do so! Simply send an email to otisfieldhistorical@gmail.com to stay updated on our events.
Visit the archives
From May through October, our Archivist, Maureen Mooney-Howard, or her designate, will be available at the Town House every Wednesday afternoon from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM to assist anyone interested in researching Otisfield’s history. We welcome you to explore our archives and consider joining the society.
Support for the Town House
We deeply appreciate the continued generosity of the people of Otisfield, both as individuals and through the Town’s generous grant at the annual meeting. This summer, we hope to undertake a much-needed rebuild of the front porch and steps of the Otisfield Town House to ensure the safety of visitors. We also extend our thanks to the Norway Savings Bank Community Giving Program for their generous donation toward this project.
