David M. Scribner to Algernon Scribner, 5 June 1864 Otisfield, June 5th 64
Old son I thought I never should get any more letters from you, so I will scribble a little, we are all well. Greenlead & Simon Scribner got home 2 hard looking boys. I think Greenleaf is the worst looking man I ever saw[.] you spoke of your town orders they are right in my room in a trunk lock[ed] up the town has not called for the first [wave?] and I would hope they wont I rather it would remain in there hands at present Anna and I have been to Bell Hill to a meeting for the first time. If you are sick as they was I want you to get away from there before you are so near... telegraph to me so I will meet you in Portland Boston or New York tell Whit that if any thing happens that you should get a ball through your heart I want him to have your Boddy embalmed You will never get out of that hole many of you alive ask Capt Sawyer. if he thinks he should see any fighting this tower [tour] I think he will [knot?] Old Grant is hovering around Richmond good I have written two or three times that you have not got I think I shant repeat we get all of yours I should think you would keep back in Battle time unless you are obliged to go in have just been eating baked suckers for dinner I feel dry bring me some water Annah I want you to write often to I will answer them if I dont scratch but one line I may get mail from you before if you get this if you wever do I cannot write any more this time so good By from your father
