Camp Hays, Jany 29th [?] 64 Father,
Thinking that perhaps you would like to hear how I was. I am better than I was when I come down but not very smart there is some sad news which perhaps you will hear before you get this, that is Samie Knight died this forenoon at 11 o'clock, I was very sorry we had got a bully good chance to get Fifer in Sargt Shaws Company Benjamin Knight has been down ever since he had been sick he was taken sick last Tuesday and so goes the world Ben and Deck take the Boddy to O tomorrow I do not know but what they will think that I was the cause of his death but I cant help it as I did notice [hard to read] that is so never so much as asked him to go untill I found that he was [words illegible] wanted him to go with me we are expecting to be paid in a few days & the 29th is expected to go [illegible] in a special train I shall expect [illegible] down next week. I want you to [illegible] at home it is getting quite dark and I must Close.
